Ferdinand (Jean-Paul Belmondo) leads a comfortable but boring life amongst the bourgeois elite in Paris. Returning alone one evening from a dull cocktail party, he decides, on the spur of the moment, to leave his wife and children for his babysitter, an ex-girlfriend, Marianne Renoir (Anna Karina). At her apartment they discover a dead body and are forced to go on the run pursued by Algerian gangsters. Travelling south from Paris in stolen cars, they finally reach the sea, where they find sanctuary on an island on the Côte d’Azur. Here, Ferdinand is content to read and write poetry, but Marianne grows restless and sets off to find her brother, a notorious gun-runner. Returning to the mainland, they immediately run into the gangsters, but manage to defeat them. For a while they are separated, but then Marianne returns with a plan to retrieve a suitcase of stolen money…
